Glass bottle shortage drives up price of Irish spirits and beers

Irish distilleries and breweries have come under mounting pressure because of an international shortage of glass bottles that has driven up the price of producing locally made spirits and beers.

The glass shortage — fuelled by surging energy costs, supply chain disruptions and rising transport fees — has forced some companies to redesign their bottles or order larger shipments from abroad to ensure they do not run out of stock.

Clonakilty Distillery, which uses glass bottles for its whiskey, gin and vodka, said the glass shortage was a "major headache" and had a direct knock-on effect for its bottom line.
