Both trends feature statement designs, inspired patterns and products that will seamlessly fit into existing schemes.
Sage green, checks and stripes, sculptural silhouettes and a statement lighting range are just a few highlights from the John Lewis spring/summer 2023 collection, which signals a new direction in design for the trusted high street retailer.
The new collection coincides with John Lewis appointing its first Director of Design for Home, Charlotta Elgh. Moving away from multiple trends, Charlotta (pictured inset) and the John Lewis design team have introduced a new, pared-back interiors rulebook with two distinct evergreen trends, Modern and Classic.
Each trend offers furniture and accessories for the home and garden that is affordable, achievable and unique in style. The SS23 collection marks the beginning of this new direction, all of which is spearheaded by Charlotta, whose experience in brand concept development includes 14 influential years at IKEA.
'Starting with spring we are moving forwards with two distinct trends that highlight and champion our heritage,' says Charlotta. The home trends have been halved and simplified into 'Modern' and 'Classic' expressions.
Modern is a contemporary retro-style combining statement design-led pieces with sophisticated pattern and texture, in a neutral palette that is both understated and elegant to create an oasis of calm. Classic, meanwhile, is fresh and bold with a relaxed, cosy feel. It features layered pattern, uplifting colour and modern vintage-inspired shapes.
Refining each collection to these two essential trends will make it easier for shoppers to identify their own style and shop accordingly. Charlotta likens it to a recipe card: 'I want to simplify the interiors for our customers – making it stylish, accessible, functional and easy to shop. I think about it like a recipe card, for example, when it comes to soft furnishings you start with a plain colour, layer on stripes and add in a graphic. I want to give our customers confidence to make these choices and discover their own unique style.'

Curves, sleek, sharp lines and grounding materials combine to make this a swoon-worthy living room setup. Balancing contemporary design with minimalist style, the hero item here is the Blocky armchair in rust (hello, sumptuous velvet) with a sculptural silhouette that just commands attention. And look at that gold fluted mirror, it adds just the right amount of wow factor.
If rust velvet isn't your thing, Blocky is also available in the on-trend, nubby-like texture, bouclé. With cut-out sides and piping along the arm perimeter, this armchair is a worthwhile addition to your living room.
Another hero piece is this delightful curved sofa. It's big enough to fit a family of five yet compact enough that it will still work in a multitude of spaces. The perfect sofa for lounging, it comes with a 15-year frame guarantee.
A dining room setup that can filter between informal meals and elegant dinner parties, this contemporary look is defined by the Cara range with its American black walnut finish – shop the dining table, dining armchair and dining chair.
The silk fibre ceiling light is also worthy of a mention. Oversized but fabulous, and with a nod to mid-century styling, it will emit a beautifully warm light to lift any room.
This soda lime glass jug has a bold and contemporary look, thanks to striking cobalt blue stripes from the rim to the base. Naturally elevating a neutral tablescape, this will see you through breakfast, lunch and dinner, and you can bring it outdoors to enjoy alfresco dining, too. There's also a matching tumbler available.
This calming, muted bedroom scheme celebrates neutrals, uncomplicated patterns and tactile textures. Highlights include the linen graphite stitch bedspread made from a blend of linen and cotton; the maze-like bloc stitch cushion in night sky; and the cord armchair which will tap into your penchant for all things mid-century design, with a woven cord back, oak timber frame and tapered legs, finished with a bouclé seat.
The white and navy cushion pictured above is also available in a tan colourway. A stylish design that works all year-round, the maze-like pattern is applied to a woven cotton base, so it's a great choice for adding both pattern and texture to your space.
A functional office space is essential for your working from home days, and what better way to stay stylishly organised. We love this solid oak and natural cane rattan desk, which could also double up as a hallway console table.
One of our favourites is the stacked wooden lamp – available in walnut/gold or black/gold – which has inlays of matt antique brass plates in each of the stepped bases, adding a luxury touch. The unique silhouette is an ideal way to tap into contemporary mid-century style.
A muted pink living room scheme helps to make these patterned soft furnishings sing. From stripes and checks to heritage patterns reimagined from the archives, layer your abode with these new in-season pieces. Back again for SS23 is the best-selling ANYDAY gingham check cushion.
The Fruit Tree print, as seen here upholstered on this compact yet classically styled armchair, depicts a fruit tree with butterflies hidden amongst the branches. Embrace this pattern all around the home with the Fruit Tree fabric, wallpaper, curtains and duvet cover.
Sage green is the 'it' colour across John Lewis' SS23 home collections. This calming colourway can be seen throughout, from furniture to upholstery.
Made using FSC certified wood, the Foxmoor furniture range (seen here as a dining table, dining bench and woven cane dining chair) offers modern country style. When paired with the industrial-inspired Millhouse ceiling light, it will emit a warm and cosy glow in the room.
There are plenty of essentials for tablescaping too, whether for a relaxed or more formal occasion, including the scalloped placemats, delightful Flora side plates, bobbin candleholders, and gingham napkins.
Available in blue, green and white, this fine china dinner plate takes inspiration from the beautiful poppy flower. Reflected in its shape, the design reimagines the soft, delicate petals of the cup-shaped flower.
A favourite, and a must-buy for your spring tablescape, is this screen-printed highball glass with flower sprig motifs. It's also available as a tumbler so you can build up a set.
Stripes, an understated and versatile pattern, is key to the Classic trend. Here, stripes are seen in the ticking stripe upholstered headboard, as well as the Trip cushion and the Frome armchair. Calming colours and wooden accents – including the Iona side table – help to create a serene, nature-inspired bedroom scheme.
