While what's in the cup is important, whether it be an iced coffee or sparkling water, what the drink is served in is half the charm. But choosing the right glassware is a personal decision. If you prefer lowballs, tumblers, or anything in between, it's important to think about a comfortable hold and long-lasting make.

When searching for the best drinking glasses on the market, we looked at a wide variety of qualifiers including value for price, materials, durability, and style. We also sought out the advice of Joey Smith, bar director at Chez Zou, and Jonathan Adler, beverage director at Shinji's.

"If you want a high quality glass where you get what you pay for, check to make sure there is no seam or line on the side of the glass," Adler says. "A truly high quality glass is hand-blown rather than made from a machine mold and later fused together."

Why You Should Get It: These glasses have a timeless shape and design.

Keep in Mind: No other color options are available besides clear.

The Duralex Le Picardie Clear Tumbler Set is our pick for the best overall drinking glasses. These glasses are durable thanks to their tempered glass construction, and they’re also dishwasher-, microwave-, and freezer-safe.

The durable glass is also resistant to staining and won't absorb any colors or retain any flavors, even after years of use. You can purchase sets in a range of sizes, including 8, 12, and 18 ounces, which are suitable for coffee, wine, and even milkshakes. These glasses are also lightweight and stackable for easy storage. Plus, the tapered bottoms create a comfortable hold.

These glasses are only available in clear though, so if you’re wanting a more colorful pick, another option may be better for you.

The Duralex Picardie 18-Piece Glassware Set is our choice for the best drinking glass. We love its durable, tempered glass construction and the three sizes’ versatility.

However, if you’re looking for an outdoor-friendly option, we recommend the Pottery Barn Jupiter Cups, which are plastic and safe for both poolside and beach use.

Drinking glasses can be crafted from a variety of materials, including plastic, enamelware, glass, or acrylic. Standard glass is the most common, and often the most sought out for consumers.

Glass can also be tempered for added durability. When tempered glass is being made, the glass is transferred quickly from heat to cold water. This process allows the glass to develop a durability against future temperature changes, meaning you can take your tempered glass straight from the dishwasher to the ice maker. The process also helps prevent the treated glasses from chipping, shattering, or cracking. Options like the Duralex Picardie 18-Piece Glassware Set are durably made from tempered glass.

For those looking for kid-safe or outdoor-safe drinking glasses, plastic or enamelware is ideal for both shatter-proof construction and an easy clean.

Most commonly listed in ounces, the size glass you purchase will depend on what you want to use it for. A standard tumbler size glass will be 12 ounces, while a juice glass will be around 8. A rocks glass, most commonly used for whiskey or scotch, will carry about 4 to 7 ounces of liquid.

Before purchasing a drinking glass, consider what you will most often use it for. If you primarily want a water or ice beverage glass, a higher capacity will be best. However, if you will be drinking more specialized drinks regularly, a smaller capacity will be sufficient.

The majority of drinking glasses will be dishwasher-safe. For extra shine and clarity, use a glass-specific dish soap. However, speciality crystal or hand-blown drinking glasses will require you to hand wash them. It's important to note that plastic or acrylic cups are prone to warping or melting if not placed on the top rack of the dishwasher.

Additionally, consider where and how you’ll store your glassware. If you have open shelves, upside down storage is best to keep out dust, but frequently used everyday glassware stored in cabinets can be stored facing up.

According to Joey Smith, bar director at Chez Zou, the safest material for drinking glasses would be acrylic. It is shatterproof and dishwasher-safe and can be enjoyed outdoors, by the pool, or on the beach without the risk of broken glass. The Pottery Barn Rigato Acrylic Drinking Glasses Set is an excellent acrylic choice since it's BPA- and lead-free.

"The least safe is anything made of metal," Smith explains. "Most metal drinkware is lined with some sort of plastic film so the acidity of your beverage won't slowly erode the metallic materials. After frequent washing, scouring, or cleaning, you can expose bare metal and that could make your drinks taste icky."

Tempered glass is by far the most durable type of glass on the market due to its heat-treated construction. But, if you are looking for durable pieces made of crystal or glass, avoid pieces with a thin lip.

"They can provide a much more elegant and enjoyable drinking experience but they are far more likely to chip and can be dangerous to drink from if a chip isn't noticed," Smith says.

While we are partial to the Duralex Picardie Glasses due to their tempered glass durability, variety of sizes, and price point, Smith prefers a tall and straight tumbler, like the Rigato Acrylic Drinking Glasses Set of Four. "The best ones are large yet delicate," he says. "They are just a pleasure to drink from, both for cocktails and spirits on the rocks."
